Book Description
Shadow Zone: While mapping the ancient underwater city of Marinth in the Atlantic Ocean, submersible designer Hannah Bryson makes a shocking discovery: she may have finally uncovered the truth about the once-glorious city's mysterious demise. Long ago, it was a thriving metropolis bursting with culture and life - Marinth's sudden disappearance has puzzled scientists for years. But now, with her unexpected new findings, Hannah realizes that the ancient city's explosive secret could have dire consequences for the modern-day world. But Hannah isn't the only one who realizes it. When her key artifact is hijacked en route to a research lab, she is thrust into an adventure in which she must match wits against a terrifying enemy who will kill anyone who stands in his way. And when Hannah becomes his target, she knows that her best hope for survival lies with Kirov, a mysterious and deadly man from her past. Together they will race to unravel Marinth's last great secret in order to prevent a catastrophe of global proportions. Before the lethal game is over, however, Hannah will realize that no one is above suspicion.
"In this adrenalin-accelerating tale of a high-stakes, high-seas conspiracy, the Johansens adeptly juggle multiple points of intrigue, smoothly balancing the prerequisite whirlwind pacing with plausible, even restrained, personal relationships. And Hannah emerges as a prepossessing, determined heroine who is more than capable of sustaining this absorbing series." (Booklist)

Deep below the deceptively beautiful waters of the Atlantic Ocean, guarded by hundreds of dolphins, lie the astonishing remains of a mysterious lost city much like the legendary Atlantis. While mapping the ancient underwater metropolis of Marinth, marine architect Hannah Bryson makes a shocking discovery: She may have finally uncovered the truth about the once-glorious city's mysterious demise. Marinth's sudden disappearance has confounded scientists for years, but now, with the revelation of a key artifact, Hannah realizes that the long-buried city's explosive secret could have dire consequences for the modern-day world. But she isn't the only one who realizes it. The artifact is hijacked, and Hannah stands alone between a power-hungry enemy and widespread destruction. Willing to form whatever alliance is necessary to regain control of this potentially world-changing weapon, Hannah joins forces with Nicholas Kirov, a loose cannon from her past who is now her best hope for survival. Together they will race to unravel Marinth's last great secret in order to prevent a catastrophe of global proportions. And before the lethal game is over, Hannah will realize that nothing and no one is what she expected, not even the dolphins, who know so much more than anyone could imagine. Shadow Zone is fast-paced and cutting edge. Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen have raised the bar again in this blood-pumping thrill ride.

I wanted that 12 year old kid to drown
I like fast-paced brain candy as much as anybody else, but a pretty okay, kind of promising story line here is tragically marred by terrible cardboard characters (okay, the supernatural dolphins were a bit much too). I couldn't actually decide which of the protagonists I liked the least, but finally concluded that the patronizing, control-freak 12 year old nephew was one of the most awful fiction characters I've run across in a while. Maybe he'll grow up to be a baddie in a future novel, because he'd be just right as a dimwitted yet narcissist stalker.

Shadow Zone review by J. A. Huestis, 2010-08-04SHADOW ZONE is a quick read and too rapid-fire to put down
Hannah Bryson's task as designer of highly technical submersible submarines used in mapping the underwater ancient city of Marinth becomes a dangerous mission. She works with her long-time friend, scientist Melis Nemid, who has made the mystery of Marinth and its sudden disappearance her lifetime study. National Geographic magazine has photographed their work, producing short documentaries about the undersea marvels they unearth. While trying to determine the reason for the once-thriving city's demise, Hannah makes a shocking discovery that could have dire consequences for the modern-day world.
Iris Johansen and her son, Roy, weave together a plausible story about intrigue, international plotters, high finance between arms dealers, the CIA, two former Russian operatives from Cold War times, and Hannah Bryson herself. Hannah is fresh from the murder of her cohort and brother, Connor, who had been her best friend and close confidant, and has left behind a 12-year-old son, wife and daughter whom she cherishes. She is now back at sea in an attempt to wipe away her grief by helping Melis and her crew solve the Marinth mystery.
Hannah discovers a brilliant trellis, configured of small pieces of glass that forms a maze of language that only Melis can translate. Artfully driving and diving her submersible, she hooks the trellis behind it to drag it on a heavy sled up to the surface. But an eerie black formation that impedes the progress loudly crashes against the submarine, narrowly close to its destruction. Its force badly damages the vehicle, but Hannah is able to bring the treasure to the water's surface. Her enemy deep near the sunken city is groups of dolphins, who butt the sub until it nearly shatters to pieces. On top safely, she and Melis can't understand the unusual behavior of the usually mild-mannered mammals.
In the meantime, Hannah's former love interest, Kirov, attacks and nearly kills a middle man for an international arms dealer, Gadaire, whose intent is to discover the scientific details of the research at Marinth. A possible link to the death of the ancient city comes from a lethal undersea growth from Marinth's sea beds. The growth, which could have destroyed the ancient civilization, could now be a possible weapon in modern arms warfare between nations. Gadaire will sell the find to the highest bidder, making him possess the ability to unleash global terror. His lethal girlfriend, Anna Devareau, kills those who stand in his way, but she has plans to subvert him in order to gain control of his vast monetary empire.
Hannah discovers that her expedition is at risk but feels helpless to control the outcome without expert help. Through former KGB officer Eugenia, she contacts Kirov, and the plot becomes murky when strong but dark Kirov brings his findings to them. He's in the sights of a CIA operative about his handiwork taking out Gadaire's muscle man. Gadaire has contacted a biological scientist, a professor in Ireland, to experiment with the now-stolen trellis with its treasure from Marinth. Hannah, together with her team, Kirov, Eugenia, Baker from the CIA, and the entire research crew, must retrieve the stolen glass pieces to solve the maze. Melis can then possibly discover a tool to destroy the deadly specimens.
SHADOW ZONE is a quick read and too rapid-fire to put down. Its unique story is well researched but does not bog down with statistics. Hannah Bryson is still the feisty, stubborn heroine who recognizes that she cannot solve the mystery of Marinth without help from her complicated relationship with Kirov. Their interaction is not without trouble, but places two strong characters in unity when results bring help for the future. I highly recommend this latest Johansen venture as an entertaining read and look forward to more from this talented mother/son duo.Rating: 5

Biography
While Iris Johansen's style has evolved over the years, the same skill that made her "one of the leading authors of romance fiction" (Barbara Kemp) has helped establish her reputation in a broader field. As Catherine Coulter noted, "Iris Johansen is a bestselling author for the best reason -- she's a wonderful storyteller."
Publishers Weekly
This disappointing sequel to the Johansens' Silent Thunder (2008) centers on the ancient city of Marinth, submerged in a massive tsunami 4,000 years ago and lying a quarter mile beneath the Atlantic Ocean. The secret that doomed Marinth's civilization to decline before the killer wave is still present and could in the wrong hands be a threat to hundreds of millions of people. As malevolent armsmerchant Vincent Gadiare and his femme-fatale lover, Anna Devareau, maneuver to get their hands on Marinth's secret, Hannah Bryson, world-class submarine designer, gathers her own legion of experts, including her love interest, enigmatic assassin Nicholas Kirov. Entertaining action scenes compensate in part for two-dimensional characters and trite romances. Informed readers may have trouble with the book's lack of verisimilitude. Submarines behave suspiciously similar to aircraft, and photosynthetic plants thrive in the water well below the photic zone. (July)
